--- We did IT - Undercut and VERY short nape

Our two week trim/tweak with Bonnie to address the "miscues" of the hybrid "Fija"/"Robyn" cut went excellently.  We did exactly what we intended to do.  I'll post the stills and videos later but here are the basics.  Bonnie decided to do a dry cut first and then do the coloring.  She sharpened up the left short-side making in more distinct by using a clipper over a comb protecting the underhair.  We did not cut the overhair any at all as we will probably be letting it grow.

We started on the long right-side with a undercut line just one inch above the top of Mrs Perfect-Cut's right ear and then straight (parallel to the floor) forward to the front and then rearward until it "daylighted' to the rising contrast line at the left rear.

After that small undercut, we combed everything down and had Mrs PC shake and move her head/hair to check how it fell around the "Fija" notch.  It wasn't quite right.  Mrs PC's hair still had a full look so we made the decision to take the undercut on the long side up to a full TWO inches but not all the way around but instead in a circular segment from the top of her ear in an ARC.  You can see the full look in the "hair-pulled-back" photo below:

IT IS AWESOME.  And as you can see in the hair down photo that the undercut did not make Mrs PC's hair look too thin.  It still has the full shiny "hairfall" look but as Mrs PC moves about the hair around the notch lays right and doesn't show any unruly underhair.  SUCCESS!

On the exposed left "Robyn" rising-contrast-line sidecut we kept the clippering to a #2 to avoid the "naked rat" look.  But on the nape we faded up from a #0 at the bottom to a #1 up under the overhair.  And because the the large undercut would not normally be seen we had Bonnie clipper that to a #1 or even #0.5.  We dyed all of the buzzed nape and sides with Brown #5.

So we are VERY pleased.  This is much earlier in our Haircut Master Plan than we planned to implement a hidden sidecut but we are happy and will probably continue it (in some form) all the way thru our Cruise in November.  I think the very short clippered sides and nape will grow in nicely.  I may even try to clipper the hidden sidecut myself as maintenance over the next few weeks.

Enjoy.

Mark, I knew you would like this new version of this haircut. Doesn't that side shot remind you of Elodie on Wombat's PassionCarre.net site

Wayner, Glad to hear that you like the short nape. It feels VERY nice - like slightly bristly velvet. I need to get a shot of Mrs PC holding up the back crown hair to show the height of the undercut at the back. It should hold up well over the next two and a half weeks before our next scheduled haircut.

OMG!!!!!! This is an amazing haircut!!! You sir, are a lucky man....not many wives would have the guts to attempt this haircut and Mrs PC pulls it off with grace!! I was concerned that her hair would be too thin to make this work, but I was wrong!!!

Again, AMAZING!!! Thank you guys so much for continuing to share your hair adventure with all of us!! THANK YOU Mrs PC for indulging us....you are awesome!!

Rockon,

YES, I am a lucky guy. Mrs Perfect-Cut is pretty easy going about all of this. She trusts Bonnie to not lead her astray and that I will look out for her and not make her look like a clown. I also was concerned about the thinness of Mrs PC's hair. When we lifted up the 1" line, I could tell that we would not be cutting away too much hair. After that did not lay right or solve the issue. We pinned up the hair up to the 2" line and again it seemed that the amount of hair that we would be cutting away was NOT that much. Thank goodness it all worked out.

I have shared all the positive comments with Mrs PC and she is glad to share our adventures.

Tom,

Thanks for stopping by and commenting. Share a link to your version of this cut if you can. Starting as short as we did will allow us to enjoy the "buzziness" longer. Our next cut will be only two weeks after this trim and will probably include a color touch up.

wow i really love your haircuts love the shaved nape with the short bob cuts you really suit them
you should shave your nape really short with like a number 1 or the metal clipper blades :)

I agree a little with TyWiz77 - a very, very short buzzed nape and side (only the hairline could be creativ formed an put a little higher by shaving) would be sooo beautiful and sexy also to dye that parts nearly black would boost the contrast very much. But I can also imagine that to bleach the short parts would be a great variation. As you still know me, I’m a big fan of hairtattoos, Mrs. PC has now such huge areas for hair tattoos, please make one at your next scheduled haircut !!! :-) Mark

WoW!
I just can't leave your blog without leaving a comment. :)
It looks awsome! The clippered right side is full 10 point! :o)

Of course you should take the clipper and maintain the undercut. It might not be needed, but the feeling is awsome when you put the clipper to the side and just do the touch-up. :) (I cut my whifes sidecut every second week to 5mm (3/16" or a #1.5), and a full haircut and color once a month)
And of course make a video of it, we want to see it!!!

Go for it!

Best regards

Tywiz and Mark,

<<I lifted Tywiz comments from YouTube before I closed off the comments there.>>

The long-side undercut is pretty much a #1 clippering and the back is a fade from a bare blade clipper at the bottom to a #2 up at the top under the small back undercut. You will see it when I post the video of the clippering. I think the back will grow out nicely and we go back for a cut and color October 2nd. On the left short-side I had Bonnie use a #2 because any shorter (even with dark brown dye) made it look TOOOO naked. So sorry you won't be seeing that.

Now that we have a hidden sidecut I may try my hand at a simple hair tattoo. If I screw it up Bonnie can clean it up at the next cut.

Shorty,

Glad that you were compelled to comment. We love the cut also. It is beautiful and daring and THEN she lifts the long right side up to reveal the hidden sidecut. WOW!!! We will probably keep it up including doing some home clippering (we will try to video it). The clippered part of the left-side will probably stay a #2 but we will probably let the blonde hair grow longer and maybe start a undercut there. Somewhere down the line we will probably grow out the left-side and then cut half (from front to back) of it all back all the way up to the part. See this and two other examples on my flickr account (http://www.flickr.com/photos/the-perfect-cut/7986010341/in/photostream).

Shorty, please consider sharing online or privately with me your home clipperings.

Awesome Cut! Everybody's wives should take note of Mrs Perfect Cut. As she has set the bar. Glad to see everything turned out the way you like it Perfect Cut. It looks great. Love the number #2 clippered nape and undercut.
enjoy it!

What a great haircut! I love it when you can see the growth pattern in the nape. Mrs 222 has an incredible pattern in hers, but refuses to cut it short enough to show. Years ago some "stylist" told her she has a weird hairline and no amount of coaxing can convince her otherwise. I praise Mrs PC for going along with such a short cut and showing everyone how awesome it can look.

Mac,

Thank you for the high complement to Mrs PC. The Trim/Tweak did exactly what we wanted and our "paper" plans have worked out REALLY well. As to other wives/girl friends - the best advice I could give is: 1- "It is only hair - it grows back", 2 - "Trust your guy - he doesn't want to make you look clownish" and 3 - "You may be surprised as to the kind and amount of nice complements you will likely get". In summary, most ladies are just too timid and conservative with their haircuts and color. My advice, give it a try you might like it.

Wayner,

Yeah, I included that photo just for you. I have seen photos of Mrs 222's nape and it is VERY pretty. You are right and my photo and I'm sure yours should demonstrate that to Mrs 222 to take the plunge and "Show it all". We want to see a shorter nape - cute swirls and all. See advice above. Plus, these details are one of the reasons that I don't like "blocked" napes (that shave the edges of the nape) that artificially truncates and obliterates these natural and attractive details.

That truly is an amazing shot of Mrs PC's nape! You have me figured out. Now if I could only convince Mrs 222. If only...

What else can i say but Wow...

Mrs PC is a diamond I would never be able to convince my wife to get a cut like this. As it was said in the movie "a Bronx Tale", she's one of the great ones!
Fantastic cut! Thanks so much for sharing!

Wow, thank’s for the new photos and videos, they are sooo great! In future please also more photos of the bleaching and coloring. The buzzing video from 12. Sept. is very exciting, I love it, very cool that Mrs PC let her hair buzz so lovely short and I’m very curious about the next appointment at the salon. Now I have a question: can you imagain to bleach all the buzzed parts in a white platinium blond? Mark

PC,

I was just now able to revisit your site for updates...the video is simply amazing!! Please let your lovely lady and bonnie know how much I enjoy watching and also listenig to the commentary. You guys are awesome!! Cant wait for the next installment of your Master Hair cut plan!!

My best to you and yours!!

Wayner,

You said "Now if I could only convince Mrs 222. If only..." Would it help if we put together Mrs 22 and Mrs PC for a "hair talk" phone call? I'm pretty sure I can talk her into it and she is a pretty good sport and may be able to help alleviate Mrs 222 reticence.

Mark,

Next appointment is Tuesday, October 2nd. But I have been talking to Mrs PC about clipping up her long side a day or so before her cut and letting me do a simple "hair tattoo" as an experiment. Of course I will video it if we do it (just for you). We will experiment with a platinum blonde nape/sides BUT given everything and Mrs PC's sensitivity to hair dye/bleach, it may be AFTER we get back off our cruise in December. How is Mrs Mark's hair and what is it looking like?

Rockon,

I will pass on your nice words to Mrs PC and Bonnie. I cringe sometimes in the salon AND as I review the videos and load them to YouTube. As you have heard the conversation goes all over the place like when any group of friends get together. Some times I have to remind them that we are video taping all this and it will be put up on the internet for all the world to see AND HEAR. But I have trouble "controlling" Mrs PC. I get my way most of the time when it comes to haircuts and colors BUT she is a headstrong lady.

Great idea from my point of view. Don't know how that would go over with Mrs.though. I think it may make a huge difference in how she looks at this, but she doesn't share our enthusiasm for hair and would be very reluctant to make the call. Something to keep me thinking about!
Thanks Wayner

I would like to add one point: 4 - "Let her go step by step - go one number shorter (on the guard if you use clippers) each time she cut her hair and see how it feels. It will only take a week to grow it one step longer when you have reached "to short" "

Wayner,

I understand. But if you ever just HAPPEN to plan a trip to Southern California, you can suggest that you two stop in and have drinks with an old friend and his wife - wink-wink.
