Our two week trim/tweak with Bonnie to address the "miscues" of the hybrid "Fija"/"Robyn" cut went excellently. We did exactly what we intended to do. I'll post the stills and videos later but here are the basics. Bonnie decided to do a dry cut first and then do the coloring. She sharpened up the left short-side making in more distinct by using a clipper over a comb protecting the underhair. We did not cut the overhair any at all as we will probably be letting it grow.
We started on the long right-side with a undercut line just one inch above the top of Mrs Perfect-Cut's right ear and then straight (parallel to the floor) forward to the front and then rearward until it "daylighted' to the rising contrast line at the left rear.
After that small undercut, we combed everything down and had Mrs PC shake and move her head/hair to check how it fell around the "Fija" notch. It wasn't quite right. Mrs PC's hair still had a full look so we made the decision to take the undercut on the long side up to a full TWO inches but not all the way around but instead in a circular segment from the top of her ear in an ARC. You can see the full look in the "hair-pulled-back" photo below:
IT IS AWESOME. And as you can see in the hair down photo that the undercut did not make Mrs PC's hair look too thin. It still has the full shiny "hairfall" look but as Mrs PC moves about the hair around the notch lays right and doesn't show any unruly underhair. SUCCESS!
On the exposed left "Robyn" rising-contrast-line sidecut we kept the clippering to a #2 to avoid the "naked rat" look. But on the nape we faded up from a #0 at the bottom to a #1 up under the overhair. And because the the large undercut would not normally be seen we had Bonnie clipper that to a #1 or even #0.5. We dyed all of the buzzed nape and sides with Brown #5.
So we are VERY pleased. This is much earlier in our Haircut Master Plan than we planned to implement a hidden sidecut but we are happy and will probably continue it (in some form) all the way thru our Cruise in November. I think the very short clippered sides and nape will grow in nicely. I may even try to clipper the hidden sidecut myself as maintenance over the next few weeks.
STILLS AND VIDEOS OF TRIM-TWEAK OF THE "FIJA" CUT
I promised everyone that I would post stills and videos of the two week adjustment to the original cutting of the "Fija" notch. First we had a much shorter drive as Bonnie is now working at "Charlie's Salon" in La Jolla, California. It is a much shorter drive for us but may be a longer drive for some of Bonnie's other clients. Charlie's Salon is a nice two chair shop in this nice seaside community. We met Charlie and he seems to be a great guy. He has operated in La Jolla for a long time and I think Bonnie will be a great addition to his shop. Bonnie will continue to cut at her old salon for an extended time to transition as many of her clients to Charlie's and build more clients in La Jolla. Here is a shot of Bonnie and Mrs Perfect-Cut at the new salon and the capeing video:
Next up was freshening up the clippering of all the buzzed areas. We had kept the left short-side at a #2 to keep enough hair to look nice.
Here is the edited and combined Initial Clippering video. Bonnie did not have all her supplies at the new salon so she had to scramble to get enough clips to hold Mrs PC's short hair out of the way of the clippering.
We chose to take the under cut to only one inch above her right ear as part of being cautious. We thought we might need to have a two inch undercut but were concerned that Mrs PC's hair was too thin and it might show. So here are a few photos of the set up.
You can see in the left picture what two inches would look like and on the right what one inch looked like (see the "1" and "2" inch markers on the comb). After we made this one inch cut, we combed all the hair down and check to see if this would resolve the concerns of underhair showing around the "Fija" notch when the hair moved. Unfortunately, the under hair DID show up. So we combed down the remaining hair up to the two inch line. It really wasn't that much more hair so we decided to go with a gigantic two inch undercut - something I did not contemplate trying for quite a while. Bonnie suggested that this additional clippering be limited to a two inch arc radiating from the top of Mrs PC's right ear. So here are three close-up shots showing the area we were going to clipper back to #0.5.
I wanted to "sharpen" up the left short-side so Bonnie trimmed up the contrast line and eventually turned the small clipper perpendicular to the hair and used her barber's comb to protect the other hair. You can see in this video the left side contrast line is much more distinct now.
Here are some shots of Bonnie clippering and trimming.
Yes, that is my hand feeling the crisp and bristly nape in the picture on the left and you can see how close and how LARGE the undercut became. I knew this was going to be a GREAT haircut. Here is the video of the clippering of the undercut.
We then re-colored with Brown #5 the clippered nape, side and undercut - this time after we did all the clippering. Notice the "arcing" shape of the undercut around the right ear
Here are the post-rinse photos. Notice the dark undercut under the combed wet blonde hair in the rear shot.
No blow-out video this time but after we blow dried Mrs PC's hair, Bonnie then went back and recut her nape EVEN SHORTER with the lowest part of the nape #0 - unguarded clipper on skin. We always do an "unblocked" nape without any shaved edge to it - just leaving the natural shape and edge to Mrs PC's nape - that is what she and I are talking about in the video.
All-in-all I have to say that Bonnie did an excellent job in executing this two week Trim/Tweak to our original hybrid "Robin"/"Fija" cut. To remind everyone once again - here is a close-up detail of the "Fija" notch and a photo of final cut with the undercut revealed.
Remember and think that under that thick long "point" of blonde hair at the right rear nape - there is nothing but clippered bristly undercut. Also look at how short the rest of the nape is and the slight swirl of Mrs PC's nape "fade"ing away.
I hope you enjoy all the detail and effort that went into this new and exciting stage along our Haircut Master Plan. Leave any comments below.
